LeCoach vs JOIN: which cycling coach app fits you?
JOIN and LeCoach are both Dutch, both adaptive, both aimed at self-coached cyclists. That's where the family resemblance ends. JOIN is proudly a science-backed algorithm: it picks tomorrow's session from a 400-plus workout library based on how you tell it you feel. LeCoach is an AI coach. It builds a periodized plan around your profile and goals, watches your real wellness data every morning (HRV, sleep, resting HR), explains every proposed change, and answers questions any time of day.
Quick verdict: Pick JOIN if you want zero decisions: a trusted algorithm that opens to today's workout and nothing else. Pick LeCoach if you want to be coached: a plan built for your body, a coach you can actually talk to, full analytics, and a clear reason behind every adaptation, at a lower price.
Who actually coaches you in JOIN?
This is the deepest difference between the two apps. JOIN is unapologetically algorithmic. Their own line: "no quick AI solutions, but rigid science-backed algorithms." That buys consistency, but it also means there is nobody to ask: why this workout, can I move tomorrow's intervals, how should I fuel a four-hour ride in the heat. LeCoach puts a real coach in the app. It sees your activities, wellness, plan and athletic profile, and it can act on all of that in conversation, any time.

Is the training plan built for you?
JOIN generates a polarized plan from three inputs (profile, goal, availability) and fills it from a shared library of 400-plus workouts. Solid sports science, and for many riders that is enough. LeCoach generates the plan and the workouts from your athletic profile: a diesel rider gets VO2max reps dosed to be attainable, a punchy sprinter gets short, sharp intervals instead. If you want to peak for your A-race while also lifting your 5-minute power, the plan tracks both goals side by side. See structured & adaptive training.
| Feature | LeCoach | JOIN |
|---|---|---|
| Plan generated from your athletic profile | ✓ Yes — full profile | ◐ Partial — 3 inputs: profile, goal, availability |
| Workout intensities matched to your rider type | ✓ Yes — a diesel gets attainable VO2max efforts | ✗ No — shared library |

| More than one periodization approach | ✓ Yes | ✗ No — polarized only |
How does the plan adapt?
Both platforms adapt. The difference is how, and who is in charge. JOIN's algorithm continuously reshuffles upcoming workouts based on RPE, readiness and availability. Effective, but the reason your week just changed is not always visible to you. LeCoach keeps a real periodized plan with a weekly rhythm and only touches it when there is a good reason. When there is one, it says what it noticed, why it matters, and what it wants to change. You approve, or you don't. No black box, no static PDF.
| Feature | LeCoach | JOIN |
|---|---|---|
| Adapts to missed or extra rides and schedule changes | ✓ Yes | ✓ Yes |
| Adapts to your recovery state | ✓ Yes — objective wellness data and self-reported feel | ✓ Yes — subjective readiness |
| Keeps a structured weekly rhythm | ✓ Yes — plan changes only when justified | ✗ No — continuous re-planning |
| Changes proposed and explained, you stay in control | ✓ Yes | ✗ No — automatic |
Does the training app listen to your body?
JOIN's Readiness Score is a subjective check-in (soreness, fatigue). If you own a Whoop, Oura or Garmin, JOIN's own help docs ask you to read the score off your wearable and type in what it means. LeCoach pulls HRV, resting HR and sleep automatically through Intervals.icu and scores them against your own rolling baseline, not a population average. When the numbers say "attention needed" in the morning, the LeCoach Recovery Score says so, and it proposes an alternative session so you don't burn a match you didn't need to.
| Feature | LeCoach | JOIN |
|---|---|---|
| Automatic HRV, resting HR and sleep import | ✓ Yes — Garmin, Whoop, Oura, Apple Health | ✗ No — manual entry |
| Scored against your personal baseline | ✓ Yes | ✗ No |
| Recovery score gates today's workout + suggests alternative | ✓ Yes — LeCoach Recovery Score | ◐ Partial — subjective readiness gating |
| Post-workout check-in | ✓ Yes — full check-in (RPE + feel + notes) | ◐ Partial — RPE only |
Will you understand your training and workouts?
JOIN's simplicity is deliberate. It replaces CTL and TSB with a single "JOIN Level" and openly markets itself against "incomprehensible graphs." If you never want to look under the hood, that's a feature. LeCoach takes the opposite bet: an educated athlete trains better. The Plan Health Dashboard analyzes and visualises your plan's health, execution and progress in one place, with signals, streaks, an AI takeaway and the actions to keep things on track. The single Plan Health Score sits on top of that dashboard as the one-number summary. Combined with the full analytics surface (CTL/ATL/TSB, power curve, eFTP, decoupling, efficiency factor) and a coach that explains its own decisions, you get smarter every block instead of staying dependent on the app.

Does JOIN fit your setup and your budget?
JOIN has excellent native iOS and Android apps, including a built-in indoor workout player that drives your trainer directly. That's a real strength if you want one app to run everything. LeCoach is web-first: it runs on every device with nothing to install, and delivers workouts to where you already ride (Zwift, Garmin, MyWhoosh, Wahoo, Rouvy and more) through deep bi-directional Intervals.icu sync. On price the gap is simply large. LeCoach Pro costs less than half of JOIN's monthly rate, and the trial is twice as long with no credit card required.

When to pick JOIN
JOIN is a well-built product with real WorldTour coaching pedigree behind it, and there are riders it fits perfectly:
- You want maximum simplicity: open the app, see today's workout, ride. No graphs, no decisions, no questions.
- You want a native mobile app with a built-in trainer player, so one app handles indoor sessions end to end.
- You don't use a wearable or Intervals.icu and are happy steering recovery by feel.
- You'd rather not know the why: you trust the algorithm and want zero training theory in your life.
When to pick LeCoach
- You want a coach to talk to, any time, about today's session, fueling, a plan change or why your legs feel empty, grounded in your actual data.
- You want a plan built for your profile and goals (including more than one goal at a time), not assembled from a shared library.
- You have real wellness data (Garmin, Whoop, Oura, Apple Health) and want it used automatically, against your own baseline.
- You want to see and understand everything: Plan Health Score, execution quality, full analytics, and grow from beginner toward elite with the same tool.
- You're on Intervals.icu (or want the best integration with it that exists).
- You want all of that for less than half of what JOIN charges, with a 14-day trial and no credit card (JOIN's is 7 days).
