    VAM is one of the simplest climbing metrics in cycling. The acronym comes from the Italian Velocità Ascensionale Media, which translates to average ascent speed. In plain terms, it tells you how many meters of elevation you climb in one hour.

    It is usually written as metres per hour, or m/h. A VAM of 1000 m/h means you would gain 1000 vertical metres if you held that pace for a full hour.

    That sounds straightforward, but the number only becomes useful when you know what it represents. This guide explains how VAM is calculated, why the duration of the effort matters, and what counts as a good VAM in real-world riding.

    How to Calculate VAM

    The calculation is simple:

    VAM = elevation gain in metres ÷ time in hours

    If you climb 500 metres in 20 minutes, your VAM is:

    500 ÷ 0.33 = roughly 1500 m/h

    Most modern head units and apps will do this for you automatically. You can also estimate it after a ride by looking at the elevation gain and moving time of a single climb. The key is to measure the actual climbing section, not the whole ride.

    Why Duration Matters More Than the Number Itself

    There is no single good VAM because the value depends on the duration of the effort used to calculate it.

    A VAM figure taken from a 60-second surge is not a true climbing VAM. At that length, the effort is closer to a sprint or neuromuscular effort than a sustained climb. It tells you how explosively you can get up a short ramp, not how well you climb for minutes or hours.

    For a meaningful climbing VAM, look at efforts that last several minutes at minimum. The most useful comparisons come from sustained climbs of 10 to 60 minutes, where aerobic fitness, power-to-weight ratio, and pacing all come into play.

    What Is a Good VAM?

    Because VAM is sensitive to gradient, weight, wind, and pacing, there is no universal answer. A lighter rider on a steep climb will often post a higher VAM than a heavier rider producing the same watts. That does not mean the lighter rider is fitter; it means the metric favours their physiology on that terrain.

    With that caveat in mind, here is a rough, non-scientific guide for a genuine hour-long climb:

    • Well-trained amateur: around 1000 m/h is a solid benchmark.

    • WorldTour professional: roughly 1700 m/h on long mountain stages.

    • Heavier or time-crunched rider: below 1000 m/h can still be perfectly respectable, especially if your strength lies on flat or rolling terrain.

    These numbers are useful as context, not as a grade. A rider with a lower VAM may still be faster on the flats, stronger in a headwind, or more durable over a full stage or sportive.

    How to Use VAM in Training

    VAM works best when you compare like with like. Use it to track the same climb under similar conditions over time. If your VAM on a local 8-minute hill improves from 1100 m/h to 1250 m/h across a season, that is a clear sign of progress.

    It is also helpful for pacing. If you know your sustainable climbing VAM from training, you can use it to avoid going too hard early in a long climb or sportive.

    Still, VAM should sit alongside power, heart rate, and perceived effort. It is a performance outcome, not a cause. It tells you that you climbed fast; it does not tell you exactly why.

    Limitations of VAM

    VAM is a useful shorthand, but it has clear limits:

    • Gradient: steeper roads produce higher VAM for the same power output. A 10% climb will give a bigger number than a 5% climb even if the effort is identical.

    • Weight: lighter riders generally climb faster at the same power, so their VAM is higher.

    • Wind and weather: a strong headwind or extreme heat can lower VAM without changing your fitness.

    • Bike and equipment: bike weight, tyre choice, and rolling resistance all play a small role.

    • Duration: short efforts inflate the number and do not reflect true climbing ability.
